In Germany, all children aged 6 and over must attend school. School attendance is free. Schooling begins by attending primary school (Grundschule) for four years. After this, the child then goes up to a secondary school, such as an intermediate secondary school (Realschule), a technical secondary school (Werkrealschule) or an academic secondary school (Gymnasium).
- Children aged between 6 and 10 are enrolled at a primary school in their school district.
- Children aged 10 and above generally attend a school near where they live.
- When enrolling in a school, the child in question must attend the enrolment appointment in person.
